This article NEEDS to be written
I am fed up of being faced by hordes of ignorant trolls all over the internet, who have probably said every stupid prejudiced thing it is possible to ever say- ESPECIALLY ON YAHOO AND YOUTUBE! AND SOMETIME DEVIANTART AS WELL! Also, Pakistan's birthady is coming up on 14th August. Yay. So I shall first give a little background, and then go to the HORRIBLE MISCONCEPTIONS!!
Pakistan was cut away from India way back in 1947 cause the Hindus and British were all REALLY OPPRESSIVE to the Muslims. So yeah, there was this awesome stoic man named Jinnah who thought "You know what, it'd be cool to change the map of the world." and promptly did so. The partition was messy. India did its best to keep us as crippled as possible, withholding money and resources. So the first years were hard. Things eventually stabilized. And recently, things are falling apart as our problems accumulate and the world media dissects us like a dead frog.
Anyway. Pakistan means "Land of the Pure" because it was seen as a place where ALL religions could be practised without ANY fear of oppression. (Whicchhhh is not how it's turning out to be presently..)
Pakistan has very beautiful northern mountains and valleys (and the men up there are hot too. White skinned and black haired and green eyed), and a long stretch of coast and beaches. We also have deserts here and there, and five main rivers.
We also probably have the BEST FOOD IN THE FREAKING UNIVERSE. No debate.
Pakistani society is based almost entirely on Islam, ie the concept of universal brotherhood, strong family ties, the charity system, and the modest clothes.
Pakistan faces many socio-economic and cultural problems, including lots of poverty, a high illiteracy rate, violent political situations, corruption, and high inflation rates. Since our government is so useless it doesnt really do anything to fix this stuff.
Anyway, I would now like to move on to annoying misconceptions.
1. Nobody Will Try to Kill You if you Visit
It's surprising how many idiots think we hide knives and guns under our hijabs and kameezes ready to spring at some innocent western tourist and "publicly behead you on TV" as one guy put it. I assure you, we don't really knife people all that often. As a matter of fact, the poor simple people of Pakistan treat foreigners like kings and queens (Although they do set the prices of souvenirs very high.) All they want to do is impress the blondes.
However, if the west keeps on treating us like this, the people are really going to eventually start hating them up to the extent of violence. It'll only be natural.
2. Yes, we HAVE Buildings, Plumbing, and Electricity
And we don't ride camels. We drive cars. You can ride camels at beaches for a small fee though. And horses. We do however, have severe electricity shortages and so most people keep power-generators that store electricity to run the house when the power goes out. In the rural areas and among poor people, it's not as simple, and they have to bear the power outtages.
Our cities are otherwise entirely normal, from their street graffiti to their tall office buildings to their flyovers and schools and things. And we also have Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Espresso, designer stores, and other NORMAL CITY-LIFE THINGS. Our villages are normally farming or agrarian-based setups.
3. We are not a nation of Mad Extremists
We are a mixture of all sorts of people, traditional and untraditional, religious and unreligious, rich and poor, dark-skinned and fair. We have a religious minority of Hindus, Christians and Parsis.
Other than that, we eat, drink, socialize, sleep, like every other human. We watch stuff on TV. We were excited over American Idol and Kate Middleton's wedding. We play sports (Cricket in particular). We go shopping. We have very close-knit supportive family systems. And the general lifestyle is built around our religion, Islam.
4. Yes, the Political Situation is Unstable
We have a corrupt and stupid government, and all the political parties are practically barbaric. There is currently some dumb targeted killing against some political group going on. Until the political tension gets better, a lot of us have to bear with transport strikes and stuff. It's annoying as hell, and it causes the local media to make a lot of fuss. Oh and some guys that think blowing themselves up in front of security personnel and minority mosques is a good way to get to heaven. THEY SCARE US AS MUCH AS THEY SCARE ANYONE ELSE. NOBODY WANTS TO DIE HORRIBLY, IF YOU DON'T KNOW THAT ALREADY.
5. Not every guy here is bearded, and nor does every woman have a hijab
We have plenty of religious "fundamentalists", but a fundamentalist is just someone who follows their religion in an orthodox manner. I have some pretty awesome "fundamentalist" friends. They don't want to kill you. Really. All they want is to please their God and be good people.
We have LOTS of girls in hijab and men in beards and prayer caps, but they are as normal as anyone who ever walked the earth. We have religious looking men, like this quiz show star Junaid Jamshed: userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/4… and we have non-religious looking men like the model Imran Abbas 1.bp.blogspot.com/_PQ1rqdGwKzQ… www.tellychakkar.com/y2k6/dec/… and other people who are in-between.
6. We DON'T SUPPORT Osama Bin Laden
The opinion on him is actually pretty divided. Some people just see him as someone who was defending his country from the USA's oil theft. Some people see him as a man who took on a far too powerful enemy. Some people see him as a heartless killer. Some people think he's a hero for retaliating to the USA's infiltration with an attack. Some people think he's a petty cowardly terrorist.
Either ways, everyone condemns the twin tower attacks as INHUMAN, whatever they think of him. But nobody thinks the attack was as big a deal as the Americans act. Worse things have been done to the world outside of America. Often by Americans. It's just the way things are seen on the flip side. *shrugs*
7. We do not HATE America
We just arent happy with their ignorant prejudice of us, the huge annoying fuss they make about how evil we are, and their political power in our country. Of course, we know they arent all like that, since in this globalized age most of us know college students, families, and friends there.
There. That is all for now. I will write more things when I meet more trolls I suppose. IF YOU KNOW AN IDIOT WHO THINKS LIKE A PARANOID BIGOT THEN KINDLY LINK HIM TO THIS ARTICLE!!
Also, I had a conversation with a nice person on Omegle right after I wrote this thing. She didn't seem to know much about Pakistan, but she was open enough to what I told her. I guess what we need is more cross-cultural communication.
Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAKISTAN!!
